The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam is a standardised test designed to assess the English language proficiency of individuals who aim to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries.
In the context of the Start-up Visa (SUV) Program, IELTS becomes a pivotal component, as language proficiency is a prerequisite for successful immigration. Here’s a brief overview about IELTS:
Test Components: The candidate is tested on the parameters of listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.
Scoring: Each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9. The overall band score is the average of the individual scores. A minimum of Level 5+ on the Canadian Language Benchmark in either English or French is required for SUV application.
Test Types: There are 2 types of tests that are being conducted. One is IELTS Academic which is relevant for those who are applying for higher education or professional registration. The other one is IELTS General Training which is relevant for those who are migrating to English-speaking countries like Canada or seeking secondary education, work experience, or training programs.
As the purpose of SUV program is migrating, the applicant of SUV program shall take the IELTS General Training test. Here is a brief detail on it to get a basic understanding of the test:
- Listening Skills: It checks how well one understands spoken English in everyday situations, including conversations, monologues, and discussions.
- Reading Skills: This part checks if you can understand information from different texts like notices, ads, company handbooks, newspapers, and magazines.
- Writing Skills: It is conducted in a two-task format whereby in first task, the candidate will be required to write a letter based on a situation and the other is essay writing.
- Speaking Skills: It is conducted in the form of interview and discussions.
